The Joint Action Front for Democratic Education has been agitating against the new Four Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP) introduced by the Delhi University. The Front held a public discussion on 31 May, 2013, in Delhi, at which a number of eminent teachers and intellectuals spoke against the new policy. One of the key speakers was Prof. A. K. Maurya, former Vice-Chancellor of EFL University, who criticized the inegalitarian attitude of the education establishment and the DU administration. You can listen to his comments in the featured video:

The Front believes Delhi University is going to introduce the Four Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP) without a national debate on its merits or demerits. Under this system there will be three categories of degrees awarded at different exit points – diploma on completion of two years, bachelor degree at three years and only those completing four years will get the Honours degree.

Apart from the additional financial burden of the extra year, this system will sharpen social hierarchies as only those from privileged sections of society will be able to reach the final year of the undergraduate proramme. Students from rural and poor background and SC/ST/OBC categories will be hit hard as they will be again compelled to study Maths, English and Science.
