HYDERABAD: The National Commission for Scheduled Caste (NCSC) will pursue the long-pending issue of providing reservation to SCs in private sector with the Centre, commission chairman P L Punia said on Wednesday.

The newly-appointed chairman was here to review the state government-sponsored welfare schemes meant for SCs. He told newspersons after meeting officials that corporates have the responsibility to provide job opportunities to persons from the SC community as they were getting loans from public finance institutions. As beneficiaries of banks, the private sector should pay attention to their social responsibility and offer employment to the SCs, he said.

The commission will draw the attention of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh towards the need for SC reservation in private sector and urge him to bring in a law, the chairman said.

Referring to the increasing cases of atrocities on SCs in the country, Punia said the state occupied third position in the number of atrocity cases registered in the country. Andhra Pradesh has the fifth largest SC population in the country. He expressed concern over the delay in resolving the pending cases.

During the meeting with officials, Punia asked the social welfare department to construct more SC hostels for women in districts.
