Punia to visit UP, ‘Dalit atrocities’ on agenda

default image

Mayawati government’s performance in curbing atrocities on Dalits, utilisation of funds meant for SCs from the special component plan and filling of reservation backlog are some of the issues the National Commission for Scheduled Castes will take up when its chairman PL Punia visits UP next week.

Punia is arriving on his first official visit on November 3. Though he was secretary to Mayawati during her previous tenure as CM, relations turned bitter during the probe into the Taj Heritage Corridor case. Punia said atrocities on Dalits in UP were on the rise but cases were not being registered. Of the cases registered, over 50 per cent were “settled” at police stations as victims face pressure for compromise or withdrawing cases.
