Meeting to support Dalit students in Vardhman Mahavir Medical College

Meeting to support our students in Vardhman Mahavir Medical College, New Delhi, and to demand implementation of Prof Mungekar's Report, at 4.00 p.m., on 22nd September, Saturday, at Sutluj Hostel Mess, JNU

(Message from Anoop Kumar, Insight Foundation)

Dear Friends,

I am writing this note regarding enormous caste discrimination faced by Dalit & Adivasi medical students at Vardhman Mahavir Medical College (VMMC), New Delhi.

As some of you might be aware that on 6th September, the National Commission of Scheduled Caste (NCSC) has come out with Prof. Mungekar Committee report on the medical college that clearly depicts the level of caste discrimination faced by our students at VMMC.

Our students have been deliberately failed so much so that many of them have to leave the course in between.Since last three years some of the Dalit students from VMMC led by Manish Kumar have been fighting against the discrimination both in and outside the campus.

Help Keep Dalit Murasu Alive-- An Appeal

Dear friends

I write this to solicit your support for sustaining a 15 year old Tamil monthly that has consistently reported on dalit politics, culture and activism from Tamil Nadu. This is Dalit Murasu, published from Chennai. With Punitha Pandian as editor and a team of people supporting it, by way of writing, photography, design, the monthly is one of its kind. It has taken a dalit lens to questions of economic, social and political injustice, and in turn, sought to link dalit concerns to the concerns articulated by various peoples' movements.

Dalit Murasu has also set new standards in political journalism: it is well-designed, the articles are carefully proof-read and the monthly has featured a range of expressions: interviews with dalit leaders, activists, cultural actors, book reviews, translations of important documents to do with dalit concerns into Tamil, translations from dalit writings available in English, coverage of important large scale events, including events in central India, the Gujarat carnage, Koodangulam, the war in Sri Lanka, on the Prevention of Atrocities Act, 1989 (a series of articles that discussed the act, case law etc), articles on dalit history... Further, it carries every month an extract from Dr Ambedkar's writings. Dalit Murasu has also published the Tamil translation of The Annihilation of Caste, among other things.

Nagesh Chaudhary

On 8th September, 2012, a memorial lecture was organised in Mumbai under the auspices of 'Adv. N L Belekar memorial lecture' series. The speaker was ex-supreme court judge B.N. Srikrishna. The subject was 'Concept of Equality under the Constitution'. J M Shah, chief justice of Bombay high court presided over the function.

Three judges of the Bombay high court spoke on the occasion. J M Shah speaking on the subject has quoted many cases during the course of his tenure as an advocate and judge. But surprisingly, he cited a verse from Manusmriti which according to him professes equality. He also gave the names of Rig Veda and Atharva Veda for advocating equality.

Rally and Burning the Effigy of Central & TN Govts

DABMSA, PDSU and AISF request you all to support and join the Rally and Burning the Effigy of Central & TN Govts to stop the police brutality on the peaceful protesters in Koodankulam Nuclear Project.

'Friends in the media have reported that all top police brass have gathered in Koodankulam to chalk out a strategy to wipe out the movement. According to the media sources, intelligence officials are reporting that two women police are missing and are untraceable. Villagers say that no policepersons have been taken hostage. It is feared that this rumour is being used to fuel public opinion against the protestors and to justify any repressive action by the police against villagers. In this context, to pre-empt any untoward incident, Mr. S.P. Udayakumar has announced that key leaders of the movement will surrender tonight at Koodankulam Police Station in the presence of prominent political leaders.'
