FOR ENTRANCE TO POLITICS

60 years ago, the champion of social justice Dr. B R Ambedkar with his thirty long years experience in active politics established 'Training School for Entrance to Politics' in July 1956 to groom youths for effective and genuine representation in our parliament & state legislatures. But, this visionary school was shut-down very soon after his death. It was such a unique institution in India that even today there exists none of its kind. Now, in the current scenario, when youths have disenchantment towards politics with inefficient, immoral and irresponsible representatives and many maladies in our parliamentary democracy in general and politics of social justice in particular, it becomes indispensable to revive this cherished institution of Ambedkar on an urgent basis. Therefore, Political School Foundation (a registered non-profit organisation, MCA, Govt. of India) is pleased to reinstate this precious thought by initiating one year training program in order to provide a golden opportunity to youths in enhancing their skill & knowledge in practical Politics.

Civic Education for the Oppressed and the Oppressors: How different it should be

karthikeyan sA young 27 years old Muthukrishnan Jeevanantham aka Rajini Krish who was pursuing Ph.D. in Jawarharlal Nehru University (JNU) allegedly committed suicide on Monday, March 14, 2017. I say 'allegedly' since I firmly believe it's another institutional murder thanks to discriminative practices that exist in Indian campuses. Such unfortunate incidents have taken place earlier as well. All of us are yet to recover from the loss of another young man, 27 years old Rohith Chakravarti Vemula's institutional murder in the campus of University of Hyderabad that took place on January 17th 2016. Rohith is the 6th victim since 2008 in University of Hyderabad.i

Reasons were analyzed, debated and solutions proposed how to stop such institutional murders and address discriminative practices that exist in the campuses which is the primary reason for such murders. Prof. Sukhadeo Thoart has written a seminal article in the Hindu on January 26th 2016, 'Discrimination on the campus'.ii He has proposed a four pronged solution namely (i) legal safeguards against discrimination, (ii) civic education, (iii) academic assistance to students who need support, and (iv) participation of Dalits in all decision-making bodies of universities/colleges.

Collector Murali's 'controversial' speech on Brahmanism

Akunuri Murali, District Collector of Bhupalpally in Telangana, echoed the views of a major section of the Bahujans when he critiqued the dietary practices imposed by Brahminical culture, at a public meeting organised on the occasion of World TB day in the district, saying they led to a deterioration in the health of the people, especially the SC/STs. He was particularly harsh on those who take up Ayyappa and Anjaneya (Hanuman) malas (ritual vows) and follow Brahminical rules of avoiding meat. The Brahminical media and civil society were quick to take offense, called the speech 'controversial', and launched a protest campaign against the collector. The following is a transcript of key parts of his speech:

If you feel that meat is becoming expensive, there are forests nearby to you, you can happily catch the wild boars and eat them. It is very important.

SCs, STs – we are all those who eat 'big' meat (beef). But in recent times, this disgusting culture called Brahminical culture has descended upon us – I am saying this because it is the reality – telling us that we should not eat beef, and all sorts of other cock and bull stories, and making us stop.

umarIn the mess bill that is religiously brought out every month by JNU's Jhelum hostel, there is an outstanding amount of Rs.5200 against the name of J.Muthukrishanan. This is the sum that he owes the 'nation.' It is a bad education loan, given in kind, and extracted pitilessly. The research scholar's relationship to the university is one of debt.

Every day at noon this mess hall is the site of a display of abundance. Lines of vessels bearing mounds of rice and dal decorate the dining tables like some dietary solar system. This is shock and awe, of the pettiest kind. Food is regimented. Food is something to be hoarded in 'bhandars.' Famine lurks around the corner. There is thunder in the distance. Everything, from food to its end-product must be harnessed in the service of a rigid social hierarchy. Arguments about food have to be subtle, and nuanced. Blunt force might cause trauma. Of course, rules are meant to be broken. But there are strict rules regarding that too, on who can eat and by how much.

Unite to stop self-punishment

It is said that those who come from poor socio-economic backgrounds have a stronger fighting spirit because of the need for survival. Then why are some students from these sections committing suicide when they enter the big universities of India? Do their expectations of themselves or the university or society go much higher when they come into the university? Or they create an illusion within themselves that after getting into the universities, the social system, the mindset of the people has probably changed?

 How would their entry into the education system just change the social system? For that, we need to constantly work on it. It is a mismatch between their expectations and the social reality. Why they fail to understand the more you grow, the stronger, more invisible, and deeper is the caste system. And we have to fight with unity, patience, persistence to act against the social system. Why are we so overwhelmed by the system? We have to act against the system, the mindset. The way Buddha to Jyotiba-Savitrimai Phule and Babasaheb worked against the system. Many more social revolutionaries worked against the system. I would request our young generation to check this self-punishing attitude and act against the system.

Why Kashmir?

shinzani jainWhy should an Indian, any Indian – student, journalist, activist, lawyer, academician, politician, worker, feminist, communist or an ordinary citizen – care about Kashmir?

First of all, it is untrue that we don't care. There are way too many shades of opinions, suggestions, ideas and even convictions that we Indians have with respect to Kashmir and Kashmiris. And funnily, we are a bit too convinced of our own versions of Kashmir. Very few of us bother to check our facts. Critical thought seems so distant that it hardly appears to be a possibility.

As obsessed as we are with our wishful fantasies of Akhand Bharat and the future of Kashmir and Kashmiris "in India", it will not be an exaggeration to claim that we Indians have little idea about the history, politics, culture, tradition, art or even the geography of Kashmir.

To most Indians, Kashmir, an "integral part of India" is paradise on earth. It is where we go to holiday, relax or to escape. To the political left, right and center it is an indisputable part of India. They do differ, just a little, on how Kashmiris, "our very own citizens", ought to be treated. To a few of us, slightly aware of the cruelties, injustices and the brutalization of the territory and its people, it is an issue too distant and far away. The problem is too huge and we, too small. And sometimes we simply choose to limit our imagination. Because it is comfortable that way, you see.
